Elephant Music

Here, the new generation of musicians comes together on one stage: the German National Youth Orchestra (BJO), which for nearly 60 years has brought together and nurtured highly talented young musicians from across Germany, performs with pianist Giorgi Gigashvili and conductor Aurel Dawidiuk, both among the most promising talents of their generation, who have launched impressive careers in recent years.

Pianist, organist, conductor – the Hanover-born Aurel Dawidiuk can hardly decide in which field to make his mark. Accordingly, Dawidiuk is active in all three, even if he will focus solely on conducting for his concert at the Elbphilharmonie.

Gigashvili was named a Rising Star by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) for the 2025/26 season and has performed in many of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls. Sergei Rachmaninofvs monumental »Concerto for Elephants« – so nicknamed because, according to calculations, it contains the most notes per second in the piano part of any major piano concerto – is a challenge for any performer. Balancing virtuosity and grand emotional gestures, Gigashvili can truly unleash himself in this powerful work.

Afterwards, the BJO under Dawidiuk performs music from Gigashvili’s native Georgia. Giya Kancheli’s »Another Step…« is a spiritual journey culminating in Modest Mussorgsky’s »Pictures at an Exhibition«. Inspired by an exhibition of works by his friend Viktor Hartmann, Mussorgsky composed ten vividly coloured movements, telling of gnomes and witches and culminating, under mighty fanfares, in »The Great Gate of Kyiv«.
