In »A Sutured World«, the Australian composer Liza Lim creates the image of a »stitched-together world«. At its core lies the question: how does light enter this world? Inspired by poems by Ursula K. Le Guin, Paul McCartney and Emily Dickinson, Lim finds her answer in the crack itself – for it is through the crack that the light enters. The idea recalls the Japanese art of kintsugi, in which fractures are highlighted with gold, allowing new beauty to emerge precisely through imperfection. The cello – Lim’s favourite instrument – plays a key role in this process: it connects fragmented musical landscapes and enables them to shine once more.

Miroslav Srnka’s »Superorganisms« likewise turns its attention to the bigger picture. Drawing on the example of ant colonies and swarms of bees, in which individual creatures become viable only through cooperation, the orchestra forms a sonic superorganism of its own. Structures emerge from seemingly insignificant impulses, gathering momentum, drifting apart and coming together again. The result is a musical process that moves between order and dissolution, between individual gesture and collective energy.
