Star conductor without airs and graces

The Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin has been at the helm of the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the flagships of the orchestral landscape in the USA, since 2012. Even though he is now head of the MET in New York too and makes guest appearances with all the major orchestras, he does not feel like a star. »Conductors are only porters doing the carrying for composers,« is his maxim. »So it is wise not to take oneself too seriously.«

In collaboration with the Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili and with works by Szymanowski, Chausson and Beethoven, he demonstrates just how sensitive and enthralling his interpretation of his role as a servant of music can be. Beethoven’s »Erocia«, with its elemental explosive forces and bold energies, is preceded on the programme by two sensitive works for violin and orchestra.

Lisa Batiashvili performs Karol Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 1. »It is about tenderness and love, and certainly about despair as well,« the artist says. »You need a broad range of expression for that.« This applies equally to Ernest Chausson‘s »Poème«, which was originally to be called »Le chant de l’amour triomphant«.
