Dedicated to the dear Lord

Of the »Big Five« top American orchestras, the Cleveland Orchestra is the most »European-sounding«. This is the legacy of an illustrious line-up of European-born conductors who have shaped the orchestra’s sound, from George Szell to Christoph von Dohnányi. Austrian-born Franz Welser-Möst has been Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra since 2002. And for the first of the two concerts for the »Elbphilharmonie Sommer« festival he has chosen works by his fellow countrymen Anton Bruckner and Alban Berg.

Berg’s Three Pieces from the »Lyric Suite« is an icon of modernism. Originally composed for string quartet, Berg went back in 1929 and arranged three movements of his suite for string orchestra. This music marries compositional progress (keyword: twelve-tone) with a passionate expression.

Next on the programme is Anton Bruckner‘s symphonic swan song. It is his colossal Ninth, dedicated to the »Dear Lord«, which was premiered in Munich in 1932, a mere 36 years after his death.
