Wounded worlds

The concert opens with Bohuslav Martinů’s Memorial to Lidice, a poignant work written to commemorate the massacre perpetrated on the population of the Czech village during the Second World War. Martinů’s work reflects on the horrors of war while maintaining hope in a better future.

That work is followed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major, or the »Jeunehomme«. The piece is a wonderful example of Mozart’s ability to create lively and complex music that is graceful and light-footed at the same time.

The evening comes to a close with Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. At the time of composition, Dvořák wrote to a friend that he hoped the symphony would »move the world«. What he ultimately produced was a symphony with a sombre, even tragic mood – in terms of technical artistry, one of the composer’s most intricately crafted works.
