Refuge in Music

The latest programme by the Silkroad Ensemble, under the artistic direction of Rhiannon Giddens, is entitled »Sanctuary: The Power of Resonance and Ritual«. In it, the musicians explore the many roles that music can play in society. Beyond entertainment, music helps people process grief and loss, release anger and frustration, and create a sense of community through shared musical experiences.

Throughout history, music has often taken on a special significance in times of conflict and crisis. During the long months of the Covid-19 pandemic, for example, songs, sounds and stories helped many people maintain their emotional well-being. A central theme of the programme is the experience of trance: the immersion in rhythmic repetition and collective energy that brings body and mind into harmony, creating a sense of inner calm beyond rational control.

In this programme, the musicians immerse themselves in one another’s musical traditions: the Italian tarantella with Mauro Durante and Francesco Turrisi, Moroccan Gnawa music with Mehdi Nassouli, American old-time music with Rhiannon Giddens and much more. Cultural exchange has been one of the cornerstones of the ensemble since its founding in 1998 by none other than Yo-Yo Ma. The celebrated cellist brought together musicians from countries along the historic Silk Road to create a vibrant dialogue between diverse musical traditions.
