Description

In terms of both his appearance and the music he writes, Arvo Pärt, born in Estonia in 1935, couldn’t be farther removed from the world of pop. Yet he enjoys something approaching pop-star status amongst the composers of contemporary music. His compositions, mostly religious in inspiration, are performed all over the world, and he has been awarded the leading music prizes. At heart, however, Pärt has remained a hermit, patiently evolving his music from tranquillity and committing it to paper with the utmost economy.

At this concert at the Elbphilharmonie, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir perform several of Pärt’s best-known and most important works. Conductor Tõnu Kaljuste was responsible for founding both ensembles; apart from Pärt’s music, he devotes a lot of his work to other Estonian composers like Heino Eller and Veljo Tormis, who were once Pärt’s teachers. Arvo Pärt himself praises the special quality of the two ensembles: »They possess an acute sense of style and feeling.«
