Opera thriller without words

It is amazing how Antonín Dvořák could, at times, be dismissive of the violoncello. He described it as a »piece of wood« that »whinges up above, and grumbles down below«. Deep down, Dvořák must have held the cello in his affections though. He could not otherwise have written his cello concerto in 1894/1895, which, for all its virtuosity, cannot help but touch the heart with its Slavic influences. Now the French master cellist Gautier Capuçon celebrates the expressive richness of this work, together with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck.

For the second concert at the »Elbphilharmonie Sommer« festival, Honeck, who has been chief conductor in Pittsburgh since 2008, has also arranged works for his orchestra. First up, an orchestral version of »Five Pieces for String Quartet« by the Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff, written in 1923, will be performed.

After the interval, the audience will witness a gripping opera thriller without words. In collaboration with Tomaš Ille, Manfred Honeck has written a suite from the opera »Elektra« – an extraordinarily riveting musical portrayal by Richard Strauss of the title character, driven by a desire for revenge.
