Drei Werke aus drei Jahrhunderten hat Thomas Hengelbrock in diesem Konzert versammelt: Seine »Hamburger Sinfonien« schuf Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach 1773 im Auftrag des Baron van Swieten; der hatte dem Komponisten ausdrücklich gestattet, sich »ganz gehen zu lassen«, ohne auf Schwierigkeiten bei Ausführung und Verständnis Rücksicht zu nehmen. So wurde Bachs kühne, von jähen Wechseln geprägte Musik zum Urbild des »Sturm und Drang« in der Musik. Über Beethovens Violinkonzert von 1806 äußerte Yehudi Menuhin einen bemerkenswerten Satz: »Diese Musik nimmt eine einmalige Position in der Reihe aller Violinwerke ein, denn - sie ist kein Violinkonzert.« Statt des typischen Wettstreits von Solisten und Orchester herrscht hier demonstrative Harmonie. Die Solistin Lisa Batiashvili hat das offenbar perfekt erfasst: Sie bekam 2006 für ihre Interpretation von Beethovens Violinkonzert den Beethoven Ring der Stadt Bonn verliehen. Als Dimitrij Schostakowitsch 1945 an die Komposition seiner Neunten Sinfonie ging, hätten die Erwartungen kaum höher sein können. Nazi-Deutschland war besiegt und die sowjetischen Kulturoberen erwarteten ein Riesenwerk des Triumphs, das Beethovens Neunte mit Chören in den Schatten stellen sollte. Doch Schostakowitsch lieferte ein lakonisch knappes und durchsichtig instrumentiertes Werk von neoklassischem Zuschnitt - und so fiel seine Neunte bei den heimischen Kritikern gnadenlos durch.

Since 1908, the Laeiszhalle has been a meeting place for Hamburg's musical life. The neo-baroque Laeiszhalle Grand Hall accommodates over 2,000 guests. (Please note: The Laeiszhalle is a separate concert hall located three kilometres away from the Elbphilharmonie.)

We suggest visitors arrive at the Laeiszhalle main entrance not later than 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Late seating is not guaranteed and latecomers may not be admitted to the concert hall.
The entrance of the Recital Hall is located on Gorch-Fock-Wall.
