Description

»You were struck by an unusual sight on stage the moment you entered the concert hall, this was the impression made upon a reviewer at the premiere of Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony in Berlin in 1896. »Apart from the orchestra, which was around 120 strong, a huge crowd of singers was also camped around the stage.« One hundred and twenty years later, performances of the symphony are still spectacular events. The work’s hopeful tale of resurrection that came to Mahler during conductor Hans von Bülow’s memorial service (and thus gave the symphony its name) gives solace even today. The »Resurrection Symphony« can now be heard in the Elbphilharmonie and will fill the hall right up to the upper tiers.
