Alternative pop from Eimsbüttel

The Recital Hall as nightclub: the »Made in Hamburg« series provides a platform for the hottest acts in Hamburg’s jazz, pop and indie scene. Monako, a band formed in Eimsbüttel in 2018, get things underway with their unmistakable brand of alternative pop.

The sound of the German-Canadian group ranges from R’n’B grooves and Canadian-inspired folk to refined indie melancholy and complex neo-jazz. After two successful EPs, singer Sadek Martin-Massarweh and his fellow musicians released their impressive debut album »Scared of the Way I Move« in January 2023.

Besides the spine-tinglingly beautiful title track, the songs serve up some gentle psychedelia as well as original rhythms and contemplative melancholy. »With this album, it was important for me to be honest, on many levels. It meant trusting myself to be the way I am,« the lead singer explains. It also meant abandoning any striving for smooth perfection in the production: »There are many passages on the album that were simply recorded on a phone or on a little field recorder, or that ended up on the album from pre-productions.«
