A different take on classical music

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra takes a very classical approach under its »Artistic Advisor« Daniele Gatti. However, the term »classical« is understood far more eclectically here than may be the case elsewhere. Alongside works by the »true« Viennese classicist Joseph Haydn, who defined this style, the orchestra also performs works by Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev, two twentieth-century Russian composers who started the »neo-classicism« trend.

150 years after Haydn, Prokofiev and Stravinsky drew on elementary »classical« forms and stylistic devices, and advocated an elegant, slimmed-down sound with smaller orchestras. At the same time, they also incorporated Modernist elements: jazzy harmonies, intricate rhythms and dramatic clashes. Prokofiev produced a real earworm with his »Symphonie classique«. And Stravinsky had a late hit with his Symphony in C, which was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1940.
