On queens and female warriors
From Penthesilea to Wonder Woman: the Amazons, proud female warriors of Greek mythology, have fascinated people for millennia, and provided rich material for books, plays and films. Europe’s cultural hubs were gripped by Amazon fever in the 17th and 18th centuries, resulting in numerous operatic librettos. From Paris to Rome, from Naples to Hamburg, opera productions about the lives, loves and battles of these skilled and courageous women abounded. The young French-Italian mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre dedicates her latest programme to heroic warrior women such as Hippolyta, Mytilene and Antiope.
