Spiritual practice and black aesthetics

Alto sax player Immanuel Wilkins, born in 1998, has already recorded two albums: 2020’s »Omega«, and »The 7th Hand« (2022). But in their timeless power, they lead us to hope for more from the young man from New York, who is now coming to the Elbphilharmonie with his quartet.

Wilkins grew up in Philadelphia, where he was surrounded by the spirituality of the Afro-American church and by the music of John Coltrane, who lived in the East Coast city for many years. Wilkins says that spiritual practice and Black aesthetics are the main influences in his music, in which as a result Gospel plays a central role as well.

On »The 7th Hand« we can hear the influence of Thelonious Monk or Ornette Coleman, of classic free jazz and performance art. For Immanuel Wilkins, who played both bass and the organ in church, music is a deep feeling that the human body releases into the world.
