»Alles, was uns umgibt, auch unsere Songs und Geschichten, unterliegt stetiger Veränderung«, sagt der Pianist Gerald Clayton. Auch musikalisch sucht er nach immer neuen Perspektiven. Seine Offenheit und hohe Sensibilität für verschiedene Musikstile brachten ihn dabei mit so verschiedenen Künstler:innen wie Michael Bublé, Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, John Scofield und Ambrose Akinmusire zusammen.
Außerdem spielt er regelmäßig an der Seite seines Mentors, der Saxofon-Legende Charles Lloyd, mit dem er auch schon zusammen in der Elbphilharmonie zu erleben war. Von dem musikalischen Mystiker und Vorreiter des Spiritual Jazz hat Clayton sich eine große Empfindsamkeit und Tiefe abgeschaut, die er inzwischen selbst als Mentor an die nächste Generation weitergibt, wie zuletzt 2025 bei der Elbphilharmonie Jazz Academy.
Gerald Clayton wurde die Musik quasi in die Wiege gelegt. Seine Mutter ist klassische Pianistin, sein Vater John Clayton ein bekannter Jazz-Bassist und Big-Band-Arrangeur und sein Onkel Jeff war ein gefragter Saxofonist. Seine eigene Musik, egal ob solo, im Charles Lloyd Quartett oder in Trio-Besetzung lässt viel Raum für freie Improvisationen. Denn in der stetigen Veränderung liegt für ihn die wahre Kunst. »Klavier spielen ist wie Surfen«, sagt der Mann aus der Küstenstadt Los Angeles. »Du legst los und hoffst, ein paar Wellen zu erwischen.«

We suggest visitors arrive at the Laeiszhalle main entrance not later than 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Late seating is not guaranteed and latecomers may not be admitted to the concert hall.
