Music in Sufism

Music is an important and beautiful part of the Sufi path, which aims, without dogma, to lead people towards a direct experience of God – through devotion, love and overcoming the ego. For centuries, Sufis have been celebrating life and its mysteries, the earthly and the transcendental, with song, hypnotic rhythms and infinite-seeming melodies on the reed flute and other instruments. In this practice, there is no separation between ecstasy and humility. And the music occupies a similarly dynamic field. In this lecture, the internationally renowned ethnologist and Islamic studies scholar Jürgen Wasim Frembgen talks about the role and importance of music in Sufi rituals.

Entry to this event is free when you present a ticket for any Sufi Festival concert as long as free seats are available.

He is a high-profile authority on Sufi culture, with a particular research interest in Sufism in Pakistan. His talk is an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the essence at the heart of the diverse musical performances at the Sufi Festival in the Elbphilharmonie over this weekend.
