Masterpiece full of symbolic power

Claude Debussy’s only opera »Pelléas et Mélisande« is a dream-like masterpiece full of subtle moods and symbols. In the opera, Prince Golaud meets the mysterious Mélisande and marries her. But when she gets to know his half-brother Pelléas, they develop a connection that leads to grave consequences...

In a production developed specially for the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, the French opera star Patricia Petibon finally gives her Elbphilharmonie debut as Mélisande. Beside her, the Swiss tenor Bernhard Richter, who has already given acclaimed performances as Pelléas at the Vienna State Opera and the Opéra de Lyon, shines. The Budapest Festival Orchestra – which was founded by the Hungarian composer Iván Fischer 40 years ago and which is regarded as one of the world’s best orchestras – returns to Hamburg.
