Sequel to the Nativity Play

At Christmas, many people celebrate the birth of Jesus and in countless churches, nativity plays set the mood for the festive season. However, for those seeking more than just familiar tradition, this concert is the perfect choice: under the baton of the renowned Berlioz specialist Robin Ticciati, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the NDR Vokalensemble present »L’enfance du Christ«, offering a profound and fascinating insight into the childhood of Jesus – a sequel to the nativity play, so to speak.

In his three-part oratorio, Berlioz traces the flight of Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus from Bethlehem to the ancient Egyptian city of Sais as a moving musical narrative full of tension, intimacy and luminous timbres. Ironically, this composer, who often had to struggle for success during his lifetime, achieved a surprise hit with »L’enfance du Christ«: the work quickly became a favourite with the public, who demanded encores in the middle of the performance. Berlioz’s dry comment is legendary: »We shall play the piece once more, but this time allow us to finish it!«

Robin Ticciati is today regarded as one of the most distinguished interpreters of Berlioz; his recordings have been showered with awards and enthusiastic critical acclaim. »His affinity with Berlioz is palpable in every bar,« wrote Fono Forum, for example, about his recording of »L’enfance du Christ« – the perfect setting for an evening in which Christmas takes on a new, moving musical depth.
