Mahler Academy Orchestra / Philipp von Steinaecker
Mahler: Symphony No. 9
With Utopia, the Mahler Academy Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, three top ensembles bring fresh energy and exciting interpretations. Two concerts are also dedicated to the French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz
Large orchestral »tankers« with long histories are one thing – but the real thrill often comes from the speedboats of the classical scene: ensembles that see themselves as strong collectives, driven to the very tip of the bow and sustained by an especially intense form of making music together. A prime example is Utopia, founded by the charismatic Teodor Currentzis, whose preference for bold interpretations comes vividly to life in Stravinsky’s »The Rite of Spring«. The Mahler Academy Orchestra emerged from a masterclass initiated by Claudio Abbado and each summer in Bolzano prepares a Mahler symphony from a historically informed perspective. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe is likewise devoted to a quasi chamber-music style of ensemble playing and performs a Romantic Christmas oratorio about the childhood of Jesus Christ by Hector Berlioz. With Berlioz’s epochal »Symphonie fantastique«, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, formerly the West Berlin Radio Orchestra, brings Subscription 3 to a close.
