Excellent acoustics, a warm atmosphere, an interested audience: word has long since spread in the USA that the Elbphilharmonie and the Laeiszhalle offer perfect conditions for jazz concerts. Some of the greatest legends from overseas have been returning to Hamburg for years. The current season once again features a mixture of old acquaintances and new faces: alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett plays his way through jazz, R&B and gospel history in his debut, pianist Hiromi takes a virtuoso excursion into fusion music and Kenny Barron shines with two long-standing partners in the supreme discipline of jazz, the piano trio. Joe Lovano and Julian Lage are the co-leaders of a brand new quartet, Branford Marsalis is embarking on an unusual folk project with his quartet and musician friends and big band leader Maria Schneider is presenting the album »Data Lords«, which has won two Grammy awards. Things get really colourful in the jazz drums series and at the Reflektor Festival in November, when guitarist Marc Ribot takes to the stage to blow up all genre boundaries.
