»Das Alte Werk« takes a fresh look at music ranging from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. Without exception, this programme features passionate experts who combine two qualities: a profound knowledge of historic performing practice and a flexible, natural musicality that fills some of the centuries-old pieces with remarkable vitality. Jordi Savall opens the programme with a celebration of 14th century pilgrims’ songs from the Spanish monastery of Montserrat. Furthermore, the programme features two operas: Monteverdi’s »L’Orfeo«, one of the first operas in music history and one of its greatest hits, and Handel’s »Giulio Cesare« with star tenor Jakub Józef Orliński in the title role and Sabine Devieilhe as the seductive Cleopatra. Ian Bostridge also takes his audience to Italy with bittersweet lament arias, as does celebrated recorder player Dorothee Oberlinger with traditional pastoral music and Christmas tales, read by Matthias Brandt. Bach’s spectacular concertos for up to four harpsichords, also inspired by Italian music, round off this subscription series.
