With passion and pathos

Julius Caesar and Cleopatra are one of the most famous couples in history. So it comes as no surprise that artists from all disciplines – from art and theatre to film – have been inspired by the passionate relationship between the Roman general and the Egyptian pharaoh. The most impressive version of the story in music came from the pen of George Frideric Handel with his 1724 opera »Giulio Cesare in Egitto« which, with its rich instrumentation and many musical ideas, remains one of the milestones of Baroque heroic opera to this day. The work is performed here for the first time in a concert version at the Elbphilharmonie with a prominent cast.

For personal reasons, Sabine Devieilhe had to cancel her participation. Sandrine Piau will take over the role of Cleopatra for her.
