Elbphilharmonie Talk with Sophie Hunger

The Swiss singer-songwriter talks about her stage comeback, her festival programme and her debut novel.

She hasn’t appeared on stage for three years now. But suddenly the wonderful Swiss singer-songwriter Sophie Hunger, who has given birth to two children and written a remarkable novel in the meantime, is ending her long absence from the limelight. And she does so in a conspicuous and famous location, and as the curator of a four-day festival bearing her name: at the »Reflektor Sophie Hunger« in the Elbphilharmonie.

Two weeks before the festival starts, the eloquent and incredibly warm-hearted artist shares in »Elbphilharmonie Talk« what it’s like returning after such a long time. She talks about every single guest of the festival that she has curated with love and respect: so much so that her keen anticipation should quicken the heartbeat of even the most languid music lover. She also provides information about the unglamorous conditions she wrote her book under, which bears the title of one of the songs from her debut album »1983«; she will read from the book to a packed Recital Hall and play the music twice on the last day of her festival: »Walzer für Niemand« (Waltz for Nobody).

The sound of her speaking voice alone makes it clear what a soulful and creative person this singer, guitarist and poet is, who sings in so many languages. Sophie Hunger appears to be a happy artist who, in all modesty, is able to grasp her happiness.

»Her music combines dry humour, profound storytelling and the raw energy of grunge in a refreshing style. At the same time, she has a voice is always tender and open.«

»Multiple languages, multiple instruments and multiple cultures are united in this unusual artist. Dreamy, surreal and generous, Dino Brandão’s music floats between old folk, psych-pop and African rhythms.«

»Jochen Neuffer -- the man so at home in the two worlds of classical music and pop – and I asked ourselves what our favourite accompaniment would be if we owned the world? Our answer: the Metropol Orchestra!«

»La Force embodies and verbalises this unique creative, avant-garde indie scene in the city where experimental sounds dance with emotional depth: Montréal Now but in the here and now and for the future.«

»He was the drummer in the first Sophie Hunger formation 15 years ago. But soon after, he embarked on his life’s quest to reinvent the drums. I can guarantee one thing: after one of his walks, you’ll hear things differently.«

»French-Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz took me with him at the outset in 2009. He showed me how to forget myself. He showed me what freedom in music means.«

»He is the great master of sound. Every time I record an album, I go to the control room and play the intro to Watson’s »Lighthouse« and then say: »That’s the only way a piano should sound: thank you!«

»Hinako showed me why so many important contemporary musicians start integrating synthesisers at some point. But if you ask her, she plays the Goldberg Variations on the fortepiano with the same dedication.«

»Intense, unpredictable, devastating and yet always devoted and warm: an uncanny sense of beauty surrounds Soap&Skin. Does she know more than all of us put together? She’s an artist from head to toe, from mind to heart.«

»Who would have thought that all this would end with an Oscar? But the greatest joy came from witnessing the children’s reactions when we performed the film score live at the Philharmonie de Paris in spring 2021.«
