Description

He was one of the most fascinating, influential and contradictory jazz musicians ever: Miles Davis. With his laid-back trumpet sound and irrepressible drive for innovation, »Mr Cool« revolutionised jazz several times over, combining it with classical, rock, hip-hop and pop, and shaping the sound of entire decades with his various all-star bands: his quintets with saxophonists John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter, pianists Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans and Chick Corea, bassists Ron Carter and Dave Holland, and other jazz giants are just as legendary as his collaboration with the congenial arranger Gil Evans, who put together entire orchestras for Miles Davis’s successful albums including »Porgy and Bess« and »Sketches of Spain«.

To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, international stars will look back on Miles Davis’s multifaceted oeuvre in five concerts and interpret his tunes in their own unique way. Trumpet icon Ambrose Akinmusire dedicates himself to the cool jazz era with his calm tones, drummer Bobby Previte brings the funky fusion sound of the 1970s to life with his »Bitches Brew« project, the NDR Big Band interprets the orchestral album »Sketches of Spain« with the dreamy »Concierto de Aranjuez«, and bass legend Marcus Miller brings together parts of the original line-up of the 1982 comeback album »We Want Miles«. As a special highlight, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane – son of Miles Davis saxophonist John Coltrane – celebrates a double birthday. His father was born in the same year as Miles Davis and would also have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2026!
