Super virtuosi that compose

Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor combines a philosophical inclination with compositional innovation and spectacular technical challenges. In the 2023/24 season, the »Pianomania« series is dedicated to this milestone of piano music, with five evenings on which this key work is illuminated through various interpretations and programme combinations. The series gets underway with the young pianist Yoav Levanon.

Levanon frames the Sonata in B Minor with works by Clara Schumann and Sergei Rachmaninov, who – like Liszt – had a double talent as a virtuosic pianist and a visionary composer. Clara Schumann’s Variations on a theme by her husband Robert are just as personal in their expressiveness as Liszt’s long sonata. The work also showcases the technical mastery of the composer, who was admired across Europe for her piano playing.

Rachmaninov also achieved legendary status as a pianist and, like Liszt, shifted the boundaries of what was considered possible on the piano. In his »Études-tableaux« (Study Pictures) he sketches a wide range of moods in a compact format, exploiting the full potential of the 88 keys.
