Description

When Danish violinist Nikolaj Znaider makes a guest appearance at the Elbphilharmonie this season with the Brahms Violin Concerto, he can count on an orchestra that has the requisite meaty sound and careful differentiation of the individual parts in its blood, as it were: the Wiener Symphoniker. The venerable orchestra, originally founded in 1900 as the »Wiener Concertverein«, has long since ascended to become a world-class ensemble. Principal conductors like Herbert von Karajan and Wolfgang Sawallisch played a decisive role in shaping the orchestra’s sound. In Dvořák’s »New World« Symphony, one of most frequently-performed symphonies in the repertoire, the Wiener Symphoniker is directed by its principal conductor Philippe Jordan, who is also designated director of music at the Vienna State Opera.
