Serious power

When a bundle of energy like Wayne Marshall is sitting at the console of the Elbphilharmonie organ, we can expect some serious power! He was already scheduled to appear twice at the Elbphilharmonie, but the concert in May 2020 had to be cancelled owing to the pandemic, and the second time round, coronavirus thwarted his plans once again: his recital in November 2021 was transformed at short notice from a concert before an audience into a concert stream. It’s a well-known fact that all good things come in threes, so this time he will finally be playing to an audience!

Franz Schmidt’s majestic Prelude and Fugue in D, »Hallelujah«, is impressive, Jean Roger-Ducasse’s dramatic Pastorale is idyllic, and Charles-Marie Widor’s well-known Fifth Symphony is inspiring; Marshall will play this work in its entirety, not just the famous Toccata.

Another colossal work is Franz Liszt’s Fantasia and Fugue on the chorale »Ad nos, ad salutarem undam«. When Wayne Marshall goes on to improvise at the end of his recital, we can be sure that the British organist, composer, pianist and conductor, known as a »musical mastermind«, will still have enough energy!
