The renowned American singer Thomas Hampson has dedicated his life to promoting the works of African American composers. In 2021, he curated the festival »Song of America: A Celebration of Black Music« at the Elbphilharmonie; now, as part of Liedstadt Hamburg, he presents Robert Owens’ song cycle »Fields of Wonder«, which can now be experienced in its entirety for the first time at the Elbphilharmonie. He will be accompanied not by a piano, but by the Rothko String Quartet, which has even brought in a double bass especially for this concert. Enriched by choreography by Liedstadt Artist-in-Residence Andreas Heise, the music transforms into a moving, deeply physical experience. The program also features songs by Leonard Bernstein, Florence B. Price, and Margaret Bonds, which poignantly complement the profound emotional worlds of »Fields of Wonder«.
