Irish folk music that goes against tradition

Despite its deep roots in Irish music, The Gloaming actually goes against the grain when it comes to old Celtic folk traditions. There is no place for nostalgia in the music of this Irish-American supergroup, formed in 2011.

While the animated singing of Iarla Ó Lionáird is drawn from the generous literature of Ireland, New Yorker Thomas Bartlett’s minimalist, elegant piano-playing and Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh’s drone - verging on psychedelic - sounds on the eight- to nine-string Norwegian Hardanger Fiddle set unusual counterpoints. Completing the band is renowned Irish folk fiddler master Martin Hayes as musical focal point with guitarist Dennis Cahill’s percussive, pronounced tones.

As a live act, The Gloaming, meaning »twilight«, is an intuitive, organic unity, sometimes sounding more post-rock than Christy Moore. This is Irish music at its best: intensely sad melodies alongside rousing jigs and reels, but with a modern, international sound.
