Jazz journalists have described Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala as »a natural phenomenon at the keyboard«. But Rantala, who studied classical piano, can also delight and touch listeners with Mozart, as he proved in 2017. At Bremen's »jazzahead« festival, he showed himself to be a talented Mozart »singer«, accompanied by his favourite orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. The Bremen-based orchestra and Rantala now delight the Elbphilharmonie audience again with music by Mozart – this time with one of the Salzburg master's major piano concertos. After the interval, they perform what is probably the most famous hymn in symphonic jazz, Gershwin's »Rhapsody in Blue«.
Please note: Instead of the four works »Freedom«, »Anyone with a Heart«, »Tears for Esbjörn« and »Hard Score« the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Iiro Rantala present »Best of Beethoven« (Arrangement: Iiro Rantala/Jaakko Kuusisto) in the second half of the concert.
»Rhapsody in Blue« for piano and orchestra opens with the best-known clarinet glissando in music history, and goes on to evolve amazing drive from jazz-inspired rhythms. No wonder that the audience at the 1924 world premiere, which included such prominent figures as Sergei Rachmaninov, Jascha Heifetz and Leopold Stokowski, went wild with enthusiasm.
