Searching for freedom

Anyone looking for freedom develops powers that resemble a full-blown storm with thunder and lightning strikes. Ludwig van Beethoven’s incidental music to Goethe’s Egmont was composed in 1810 and depicts the title hero’s search for freedom, which ultimately fails due to internal and external contradictions. Gustav Mahler also took many liberties in setting some numbers from the »Des Knaben Wunderhorn« folk song collection to music. In some songs he merged several – sometimes very contradicting – lyrics.
