Description

The musicians of the Symphoniker Hamburg celebrate the stylistic diversity of the string repertoire, from Viennese Classicism and the Roaring Twenties to the sweeping Romanticism of the wider world. The programme opens with Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet. Written in 1924, the collection reflects the vibrant spirit of the 1920s: with cheeky irony, sparkling energy and influences from jazz as well as rhythmically distinctive dances such as the tango and tarantella, Schulhoff skilfully breaks with traditional forms and sets the scene for an electrifying opening.

Next comes a milestone of classical chamber music: Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 in C major, widely known as the »Dissonance Quartet«. Its famous name derives from the bold, harmonically suspended bars of the introduction, whose sonic daring continues to fascinate to this day. What begins with such mystery and almost modern-sounding harmonies soon gives way to radiant clarity, masterful counterpoint and pure Classical elegance – a masterpiece in dialogue between four string instruments.

The crowning finale is a late work by Max Bruch: his String Octet in B-flat major. Written for four violins, two violas, cello and double bass, the work unfolds an almost symphonic richness of sound. Bruch remains true to his distinctive Romantic idiom, weaving flourishing melodic lines into a rich, warm sonority. A stirring wave of passion and sonic splendour sends the audience on their way, buoyed by the music.
