Echo of an unfinished symphony

Like Ludwig van Beethoven and Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler also died before completing his Tenth Symphony. Mahler planned to write five movements for his Tenth. Of those, he only managed to complete the opening Adagio. But now, more than a century later, this is being performed in an exciting new context: Teodor Currentzis has asked four renowned contemporary composers to reflect Mahler’s symphonic swansong in their orchestral works.

Numerous attempts have been made to reconstruct Mahler’s Tenth on the basis of his many drafts and sketches. But Teodor Currentzis and the SWR Symphony Orchestra have taken a different approach. Currentzis has invited four composers – the Frenchmen Philippe Manoury and Mark Andre, the American Jay Schwartz and the Ukrainian Alexey Retinsky – each in their own very different musical language, to explore Mahler’s legacy and modernity. Mahler for the 21st century!
