Between Psych Rock and Arabic Poetry

Ballads, driving rhythms, floating synthesizers and the hypnotic voice of Sandy Chamoun: for the opening concert of the »Lebanon« festival, the band Sanam transforms the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall into a vibrant indie club from Beirut, where experimental psych and krautrock meet Egyptian musical traditions and Arabic poetry. The six musicians present their current album »Sametou Sawtan – I Heard a Voice«.

On stage, guitars, bass, drums and electronic textures merge with Arabic melodies and poetry – at times airy and restrained, at others erupting with explosive energy. The songs capture the mysticism and creative pulse of Beirut, making the band a vivid reflection of their city. »In the past, there were cliques: the experimental kids, the rockers, the fans of Arabic music and the jazz fans. Today, everyone plays with everyone,« says guitarist and keyboardist Anthony Sahyoun – a statement that perfectly captures the openness, energy and richness of Sanam’s music.
