Royal guests from London

»Black bread with oysters and caviar« - this is how Edvard Grieg once described his music with a hint of irony: highly elaborate, in other words, but with a clear nod at Norwegian folk music. This mixture is as good as unique, and his Piano Concerto is the work that embodies this style to perfection. The concerto brought the 25-year-old composer his breakthrough and the recognition of such famous colleagues as Franz Liszt, who immediately played it at sight. We don’t know whether Jan Lisiecki managed this as well, but it is perfectly possible. Either way, the sumptuous score with its cascades of notes and its marvellous lyrical moments is one of Grieg’s showpieces.

Another musical pièce de résistance is Prokofiev’s ballet music »Romeo and Juliet« – no other composer before or since has set this tragic love story to such touching music. One doesn’t even need to see the dancers on stage to understand that two young people are engaged here in an existential struggle over their love.
