Few bodies of chamber music encompass such an extraordinary journey, or reveal such a profound and compositionally revolutionary development, as Ludwig van Beethoven’s string quartets. They continue to delight and unsettle listeners to this day, while the late quartets remain, in many respects, perhaps the most modern music ever written. To mark Beethoven Year 2027, the internationally acclaimed Quatuor Ébène presents the complete Beethoven string quartets in six concerts presented by the Hamburger Kammermusikfreunde. The cycle ranges from the striking impact of the six early quartets and the middle-period works, perhaps the most technically demanding of all, to the fascinating and enigmatic late quartets, culminating in the Great Fugue.
