Looking over Wozzeck’s shoulder

Music journalists Manuel Brug (Die Welt), Joachim Mischke (Hamburger Abendblatt), Regine Müller (taz / SWR) and Christian Wildhagen (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) form the »Quartet of Critics« on this evening. This panel of experts from the »German Record Critics’ Award« regularly discusses important works of classical music and consists of different members for each discussion. In the course of the Hamburg International Music Festival, the quartet takes Alban Berg’s opera »Wozzeck« to task, which the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra showcases on 24 and 25 May at the Elbphilharmonie.

With its sensitive and profoundly honest portrait of a society undermined by militarism and the abysses into which it thrusts people, the opera became one of the greatest successes of the Weimar Republic – a success that persists unabated to this day. The Quartet of Critics compares different – historical and recent – recordings and thereby outlines the relevance of this masterpiece of the modern age in a turbulent present day.

Music critics and journalists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland have joined forces in the »German Record Critics’ Award« association to regularly honour outstanding music and spoken word productions. This committee of a maximum of 160 judges attaches importance to reaching independent judgements, uninfluenced by the interests of record and/or audio book producers. A »Quartet of Critics« meets regularly to publicly discuss a particular work and compare recordings.
