Description

Arthur Jeffes’s Penguin Cafe rarely makes live appearances. That makes it all the more special that Nils Frahm, who releases his records on the British label Erased Tapes just like Jeffes, adds something as magical and refined to his »Reflektor« festival as the musical gems from the Penguin Cafe.

The Penguin Cafe Orchestra was a wonderful airy-fairy project in the second half of the 1970s with a style located somewhere between art rock and classical music; a project that could only come about in England at that time. The driving force behind it was guitarist, composer and producer Simon Jeffes. Brian Eno produced and released the first album, »Music from the Penguin Cafe«, in 1976: a treasure trove of highly inconspicuous masterpieces that affords just as much pleasure today to lovers of far-flung music as it did over 40 years ago.

After Simon Jeffes died in 1997, the Penguin Cafe was left an orphan. But in 2009 his son Arthur revived this refuge of rare and thoroughly delightful music. Following in his father’s footsteps and working together with various artists, Arthur Jeffes created his own, completely original music, mixing an infallible taste for the out-of-the-ordinary with influences from several centuries and a wide variety of cultural traditions.
