Four curious friends

By winning first prize at the internationally renowned Concours de Genève, the Danish NOVO Quartet has hit the fast track to a successful musical career and is in the process of establishing an excellent reputation in this »premier discipline«. For the four young musicians, a key source of strength lies outside music: »The secret to our quartet playing is our close friendship – during our rehearsals we sometimes take long breaks, which does us a world of good on a personal level.«

Their artistic credo is to remain curious and not (yet) commit to a single style or era. Their concert programme at the Elbphilharmonie is correspondingly wide-ranging: Caroline Shaw’s »Entr’acte« is inspired by Haydn’s string quartets, whilst Terry Riley’s »Good Medicine« is an ecstatic piece of minimal music.

With Shostakovich and Beethoven, the NOVO Quartet has chosen two masters of the quartet form. Whilst Shostakovich’s quartet is a 13-minute miniature, Beethoven strings together a full seven movements. A much-discussed risk in his day, today no one would question that it is magnificent music!
