Tragedy of Hearing

A fascinating mix of opera, sound installation and musical experiment: Luigi Nono’s »Prometeo« is the highlight of this season’s Prometheus focus and at the same time the magnum opus of the Italian avant-garde composer. Under the direction of Nono specialist François-Xavier Roth, the SWR Symphony Orchestra transforms the concert hall into a multidimensional sound space – a unique listening experience between music, space and silence.

For Nono, it is not the radiant hero who brings fire to humanity that is at the center, but the existential search for knowledge and meaning: »Prometheus is above all a great problem: the will toward the Other.« The composer paints the image of a solitary traveler wandering through unknown soundscapes. Thus a musical archipelago emerges, whose islands consist of texts by Hesiod, Aeschylus, Friedrich Hölderlin, Walter Benjamin and others – each fragment opens a new perspective on the myth.

Delicate sound shadows, microtonal oscillations and meditative choirs give the work an almost spiritual dimension. Nono invites the audience to listen consciously, to take their time, and to experience the space of silence as part of the music. The performance thus becomes a sensual experience – a »tragedy of listening«.
