Three friends from Göteborg start a band. Some years later their singer becomes an international superstar, and after selling millions of his own records he reactivates the band of his youth, which 12 years after its inception records its first CD. That is the story of Junip, the band of José González, Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn. While Swedish-Argentine singer José González draws on a reduced folk music aesthetic and gently breathed vocals in his solo work, Junip as a trio flirts more directly with other genres: The musicians embellish their psychedelic sounds with the warmer colours of krautrock and playful percussion motifs; their current album »Junip« widens that spectrum with subtle influences from world music. »We are currently somewhere between a German jazz band and an African pop band«, states the trio itself. Their songs are perfectly arranged and balanced, but never too clean – almost as if they were ancient artefacts covered with a layer of sound patina. Junip draws you into a dreamy, melancholic universe that González adorns with comforting lyrics. Sometimes it pays to heed the call.
