Description

»Oh, how I wish I could compose so simply!«, Richard Strauss is reported to have exclaimed during a recital of Mozart‘s music. However, Strauss’ own works also exhibit the Mozartian »gaiety elevated to a new level of human truth« (Ernst Krause) – especially in his opera »Der Rosenkavalier«, which is set in Vienna of the eighteenth century.

Thomas Hengelbrock combines the orchestral suite from »Der Rosenkavalier« with a rarely performed piece of stage music and a piano concerto by Mozart. The programme is opened by a forgotten classic of orchestral literature, which in turn links back to Strauss: the early concert overture by the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski is clearly influenced by Strauss’ musical language.
