Rhythm combination and brass – NDR Bigband plays the music of Peter Herbolzheimer
He was one of the most important colleagues and at the same time one of the leading competitors in German jazz. The NDR Bigband now pays tribute to the composer and arranger, orchestra founder and leader Peter Herbolzheimer, who started to rewrite the history of big jazz orchestras in Germany.
»Old Potbelly« – this is how the legendary German jazz journalist Werner Burkhardt once described him with cheeky delight. And it’s true that Peter Herbolzheimer, born (1935) and bred in Bucharest as the son of German-Rumanian parents, fits the description: he was a true heavyweight. He originally learned to play the guitar, then studied the trombone after he moved to Germany in 1951. Jörg Achim Keller, one of Herbolzheimer’s musical heirs, has created a concert programme for the NDR Bigband that reminds us of all the milestones that »Old Potbelly« set up.
