A »composer in residence« is a composer who resides at the same place as the ensemble for which he composes. Welshman Gwilym Simcock, born 1981, has been Composer in Residence with the NDR Bigband since last season; as one of today’s most sought-after musicians, however, he is not so much residential as highly mobile. In between a busy touring schedule with the Pat Metheny Group, guest appearances as a soloist and composition commissions, and his obligations towards his own trio, the composer, horn player and pianist nonetheless finds the time to regularly write new material for the NDR Bigband. Sophisticated, rousing and refined – that’s his trademark. Simcock is a musician under tension who knows how to infuse a concert hall with this tension as much as the club-like space at Kampnagel.
