Of joie de vivre and serenity
How does Brazil, this incredibly large country where numerous cultures have encountered each other and lived together for centuries, sound? The Finnish filmmaker and fan of Brazil, Mika Kaurismäki, delves into this question in »Moro no Brasil« (»I live in Brazil«). He has travelled more than 4000 kilometres across the country and captured the intoxicating music scene of its people with personal curiosity and a lot of authenticity.
It is not the stars who take centre stage here, but the seemingly small bands, regional singing areas, dance groups and musicians – »folk music« in the true sense of the word. And it is in a class of its own, it enriches the (at times tough) daily routine, brings people together and is full of vitality and serenity. While outside of Brazil samba and bossa nova are especially well-known, the film shows what remarkable stylistic variation the country still has to offer with influences from Afro-Brazilian, Arabian, European and, in particular, Portuguese music.
»Moro no Brasil« is thereby the perfect preparation for the Elbphilharmonie Festival »Brazilian Legends« and particularly for the concert on 23 October 2024 with João Bosco and Jacques Morelenbaum. In his songs, João Bosco sings about precisely the life shown in the film and has, consequently, been one of the very great heroes of Brazilian music for decades.
