The triumph of dance

Sir Simon Rattle – podium star, popular figure and (still) chief conductor of what is surely the UK’s best orchestra – is famous for his refined programming. Kicking off their residency at the Elbphilharmonie, the London Symphony Orchestra and its music director perform two works that could, at first glance, hardly seem more different: Romantic and evocative ballet sounds in Tchaikovsky’s »Nutcracker«, and rhythmically complex, brass-accentuated orchestra sounds in Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements.
