Operette trifft Opern-Persiflage und Musical

Leonard Bernstein’s second great success on stage after »West Side Story« is »Candide«, an entertaining mixture between operetta, mock-opera and musical. Bernstein encased the story with symphonically exuberant music full of verve and colourful instrumentation, which come into full effect in this scenic production with Jeffrey Tate and his Hamburger Symphoniker.

The deliberately absurd libretto is actually based on a satire by French enlightenment philosopher Voltaire, who wanted to refute the assumption of his colleague Leibniz that we live in »the best of all possible worlds« by means of jet-black humour. None other than Isabel Karajan, daughter of the great maestro Herbert von Karajan, guides the audience through the performance as a narrator in German. American tenor Jason Bridges sings the part of the nobleman Candide.
