The magic of the low notes

Musician and scholar, composer and interpreter: the Catalan viol player Jordi Savall is one of the most versatile and interesting figures on the Early Music scene. He has founded several orchestras with which he revives music from the Middle ages to the Romantic era in authentic performances, evolving one innovative concept or format after another to make the music of earlier periods accessible to the wider public. A long series of CDs bears witness to the versatility and outstanding quality of his work. Savall pulled off a remarkable coup in 1991 with the award-winning film »All the Mornings of the World« (German title: »Die siebente Saite«): directed by Alain Corneau, it portrays in poetic images the career of the Baroque composer and viol player Marin Marais and his relationship to his teacher and the latter’s daughters. Jordi Savall used the music of Marais, François Couperin and others to create a film score for which he was awarded the »César« film prize. In the Recital Hall he performs this music especially for the Elbphilharmonie anniversary week with a small but fine ensemble.
