A fairytale collaboration

»Everyone needs music – and for me, music means everything!« says Jaemin Han. With this mindset, the young cellist is on his way to becoming one of the world’s top performers. He is joined by Roman Borisov, who is barely older and is appearing at the Elbphilharmonie for the second time. In this programme, the piano and cello are equal partners, giving both musicians ample opportunity to showcase their finest qualities.

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote several cello sonatas during his lifetime. In this one, his entire compositional expertise comes together in sophisticated variations, delicate lyricism and multi-layered rhythms. Sergei Rachmaninov was himself a piano virtuoso and endowed the piano part of his sonata with just as many virtuoso refinements as the cello part. Finally, Leoš Janáček drew inspiration from a fairy tale: in three poetic musical scenes, the cello, as Prince Ivan, meets the piano, as Princess Marja. But will the story have a happy ending?
