The Final Farewell

Famous last words and famous last works have much in common. They are both regarded as deeply meaningful. We assume them to be a deliberate final statement from the departed. There is nothing more to add. In the final piano sonatas composed by Beethoven and Schubert, such sentiments become almost tangible. The music of these two sonatas is so emotional, so complete and so timeless that modern audiences still find them profoundly moving. In honour of the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death and of Schubert’s 230th birthday, pianist Hélène Grimaud has chosen to play their enduring and masterful final sonatas at her recital. After all, she understands better than anyone how to transform Schubert’s musical poetry and Beethoven’s philosophical insights into a meaningful experience for her audience.
